The Building

The Colfax City Hall and Colfax Police Department Building is located inside a historic building that underwent a massive restoration and renovation project in 2020/2021 under the guidance of Invision Architecture of Des Moines, Iowa.  The newly renovated building features a restored historic brick façade and window storefront with a modern industrial style office space interior which serves the expanding needs of the City of Colfax offices, the Colfax Police Department offices, and the Colfax Main Street office. This building was built circa 1915-1920 as the Everett & Baker Ford Garage which serviced the booming early 20th Century automobile industry that sprung up along the River to River Road, an early highway through Colfax along Howard Street. In 1937, the building was transformed into the air-conditioned, 500-seat Star Theatre, which showed Hollywood’s latest films to Colfax residents and hosted local assemblies and productions for the school and community. In the 1950s, the building was turned into Triangle Lanes Bowling Alley, which was a popular local hang out for over 50 years.  The building’s interior features the bowling alley’s lanes which were recycled into interior design elements after they were saved and donated by a local community leader. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Downtown Colfax’s Spring City Commercial Historic District. The City of Colfax is proud to have this beautifully renovated space to serve the community’s needs both now and for future generations.
